Why We're Here

I'm taking a five-month leave from Minnesota as a part of my college program, and will be living in the country outside of a little town in Northern Ireland in the UK. These are my adventures. Please pray for me.

Important Terms To Know:

  • 3-door/5-door: a vehicle description, with the trunk (boot) counting as a door
  • awk: a sentence filler of sorts, like "awk, no" or something? I think it's like how we use "oh"...
  • aye: yes
  • banter: joking around with friends, also called "bant"
  • bing: a game guys play to point out hot girls...so classy...
  • biscuits: cookies, and generally store-bought ones
  • bolognese: marinara sauce for spaghetti
  • boot: the trunk of a car
  • bout ye: slurring of "how about you" which just means "what's up"
  • brown sauce: a kind of sauce they use on the side of meals...and I can't really describe it at all...
  • buns: made in cupcake tins with papers, but not as sweet...more like an in-between zone of cake and bread
  • chip buddy: buttered bread with chips in the middle as a sandwich
  • chippy, the: a place which serves fish and chips takeout (which they say as takeaway here)
  • chips: fries, but they're a bit different in shape, and served with basically everything (even Chinese)...and eaten with a fork and knife
  • class/lethal/unreal/brilliant: various terms for describing how good something is
  • Come Dine With Me: a reality television show you must watch to truly understand
  • craic: pronounced "crack," it means something like the condition of the place you're at, or when posed in a question like "how are things/what's up"
  • crisps: potato chips
  • cuppa: "cup of" but will be written out as former, and if it doesn't include what it's a cup of, it's assumed it's a cup of tea
  • dab hand: be skilled at (to be a dab hand)
  • dander: a short walk
  • dead-on: to be honest, no idea what word to compare it to quite yet...they just use it to describe people A LOT
  • eejit: idiot
  • football: soccer (a given, but I thought I'd put it up anyway)
  • fraped: "Facebook raped," when someone hacks your profile and changes your status to something super awkward or embarrassing or something...and it's a big thing here...
  • gutted: to be completely dismayed or disappointed or upset...
  • I can't be bothered: a phrase meaning "I'm too lazy" or "I don't feel like it" and not at all rude in tone though initially it always came across that way to me...
  • injection: medical shots
  • jumper: a hooded sweatshirt
  • keep 'er lit: an important phrase to know, though I don't know an equivalent....
  • lift: either the elevator or getting a ride somewhere, or can be used to mean you picked up something for purchase...or also stealing, but that's by context
  • lorry: truck
  • lough: lake
  • Lucozade: a drink sold by the bottle here and sold in a couple different flavors...the orange one = good, the energy one = vile and nasty
  • ma/da: mom/dad/mother/father
  • mate: ...pretty obvious, is it not?
  • mince: ground beef/hamburger meat, whatever you call it...but they always refer to it as "mince"
  • nice: used to describe just about anything, especially food (e.g., "oh, that tastes nice") and express approval, etc.
  • pants: means "underwear/underpants" here...so, say "trousers" instead
  • red sauce: ketchup (no joke...even though it says "ketchup" right on the dang bottle of Heinz...)
  • sausage roll: a kind of food with a sausage (but not with a heavy casing like ours) baked in a pastry...delicious
  • scone: DELICIOUS. that's all you need to know.
  • scundered: to be embarassed
  • slagging: giving someone grief with sarcasm--it's heavier than joking, but lighter than actual teasing
  • stuck in: kind of like...to get in there and get it done?
  • taking the mick: a phrase I still don't quite understand...but I think it's the same as when we say we're giving someone crap?
  • Thai sweet chili sauce: a kind of dressing/sauce you can use, and is quite popular
  • toasties: toasted sandwiches
  • Troubles, The: how they refer to the time from the late '60s to the late '90s and the conflict between the Protestant unionists and the Catholic nationalists; following, NI joined the United Kingdom
  • tuck in: said at meals, means "feel free to help yourself"
  • Twelfth, The: July 12, also known as Orangeman's Day, celebrating the victory of the Protestant king William of Orange over the Catholic king James II in 1690
  • vinegar: malt vinegar
  • wee think: to think something over, "have a wee think"
  • wee: little, but used much more than we would use "little"
  • work away: a phrase meaning "go ahead" or "help yourself"
  • wrecked/shattered: exhausted
  • yous: collective "you", when Midwesterners would say "you guys"
